2009-07-19 Lazerzap.Com Updates

The Oddmuse wiki engine at lazerzap.com[1] has been getting a few enhancements.

I have been busy inside the perl code. Making some adjustments to a few modules. Getting stuck in to some HTML in the header.

Basically what I did was modify some existing HTML that I have been using at the Lazerzap.Com front page.

Digsby

On the left of the header you can see the Digsby Chat Widget. The widget is setup to contact my Digsby Instant messenger client whenever anyone sends a message from the website. I get an ‘instant message’ (IM) from Digsby. I can also reply to the message in real time using the Digsby IM Client. The person visiting the website doesn’t need to refresh the webpage to send and receive messages. It’s a good solution for someone looking for an easy to setup chat system for their website. Digsby also interfaces to many existing IM servers. MSN, Yahoo, AIM/ICQ. Digsby also acts as a POP mailer front end. Digsby also interfaces to Twitter, Myspace and others.

Logo

The logo occupies the majority of the real estate.

Guestbook

The unmodified code from http://Lazerzap.Com.

Affiliate Hosts

The unmodified code from http://Lazerzap.Com.

Google Search

This was/is a problem. Seems the original code that I have been using is not compatible with the latest version of PHP. As a result. When I moved from home hosting to paid hosting the code stopped working. I tried looking for some up to date code. But I wasn’t successful. So in the end I patched the code to call my old server.[2] So when I remember to turn my old server on. The google search function works very well. Unfortunately I forget to turn it on. I turn it off when it is consuming bandwidth and interfering with other activities. Mostly the old server stays turned off. So dont expect this option to work all the time.

Weather Widget

Someone elses widget. Code remains the same as http://Lazerzap.Com.

Wiki Shortcuts

I created various wiki pages to accomodate the shortcuts. Many can be expanded and improved.

Tags Support

I was having all kinds of trouble with Tag support. (It’s still not really solved either) Various modules that I was experimenting with seemed to conflict with each other. The search function didn’t seem to operate with the module that I determined I would use. So I compared both modules and made some changes to the code. This got the search function working enough to use. But I still wasn’t happy with the tag implimentation. The module I selected also gave me access to the Tagmap[3] module. In the end I went into the routine that ‘creates’ the actual tag on the wiki page and modified it by adding some code from tags.pl. I also added the Technorati button and link. The result seems to work fine.

Technorati Ping

I still need to get the auto ping operating to Technorati. I have ‘borrowed’ some code to do this. But it doesn’t appear to work at this stage.

Code: (Cut and paste into your Oddmuse Config file)

 @NotifyUrlPatterns = ('http://www.technorati.com/ping.html?url=$url');

This is what the tags look like now:

Modify Config

I also wanted to modify the ‘default’ edit new page text. I correctly assumed that I would be able to add my ‘tags’ code there to offer some default links and tags as a header on each page.

Code: (Cut and paste into your Oddmuse Config file)

 $NewText     = "==== Navigate: [[Main Menu]] | [[Categories]] | [http://lazerzap.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl/TagMap TagMap] | [[SandBox]]
 ====\nTags: LazerWikiBlog, LazerZap.Com, Your_Tag_Here\n\n----\n\nBegin Describing the NEW Page here.\n";

Ahh. Well.. It forces me to initiate a harsher protocol for myself.

Edit: Turned off the “Comments_on” feature to stop a determined spammer.
